Occupations: Surgical Technologists
Surgical Technologists
Overview of the profession:
Surgical technologists, also known as surgical techs, play a crucial role in the operating room by providing essential support to surgeons and other medical staff during surgical procedures. They support the surgical team by prepping and cleaning the operating room before and after surgery, ensuring that all necessary instruments and supplies are sterile and readily available. During surgery, surgical technologists assist by passing instruments, maintaining a sterile field, and keeping track of sponges and other items used. To become a Certified Surgical Technologist in Michigan, individuals must complete an accredited Associate of Applied Sciences in Surgical Technology or an employer-sponsored Surgical Technology Apprenticeship program. Then, upon completion of training, professionals must pass the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting Surgical Technologist exam. Due to their specialization in surgery, surgical technologists primarily work in hospitals; however, they may also find employment in outpatient centers or doctor offices--where minor procedures are performed--and in organ donor centers. Their expertise and ability to anticipate the needs of the surgical team contribute significantly to patient safety and the overall success of surgical interventions.
