The Mentoring Project to Launch in January 2020

Nurse turnover and retention is an ongoing problem in healthcare. Studies estimate a rate of 17% turnover in nursing. The retention of novice nurses to the profession is at risk as well. It is estimated that around 33% of new nurses leave the nursing workforce within the first five years. Patient care, quality of care, and patient outcomes suffer as a result.

The Mentoring Project aims to provide leadership training and professional development to help mitigate burnout for experienced nurses. The project also aims to provide support to novice nurses who could benefit from developing resiliency as they experience compassion fatigue for the first time in their careers.

Participating mentors and mentees will be matched based on work setting, practice area and professional interests. Please note that all activities are guided by mentors, but driven by mentees.

The main areas of focus throughout this project will be:

  1. Professional resiliency

  2. Communication

  3. Conflicts in the workplace

  4. Leadership skills

  5. Time management

  6. Professional goals

Please visit miactioncoalition.org/mentoring to learn more and sign up to be notified when the project launches in January 2020.

This project was made possible through support from the Center to Champion Nursing in America, a joint initiative of AARP Foundation, AARP, and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
