Occupations: Nurse Practitioners

Nurse Practitioners

Overview of the profession:

Nurse practitioners (NPs) play a crucial role in the healthcare system, serving as advanced practice registered nurses who provide comprehensive patient care under the supervision of a physician. They are trained to assess, diagnose, and treat various health conditions. NPs' ability to prescribe medication and perform and interpret patient tests makes them invaluable in addressing the growing demand for accessible healthcare. To become a licensed NP, professionals must hold a current and valid Registered Nurse license and complete a Master of Science in Nursing degree program accredited by the Commission on Collegiate or the Nursing Education Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing. Then, professionals need to earn a national credential through one of the Michigan Nursing Board-approved certification organizations. NPs are employed by hospitals, outpatient clinics, medical offices, and nursing homes. Outside of clinical settings, NPs also work in public health departments and government agencies. Their role in increasing patient access to care and connecting with patients to provide holistic care makes NPs vital to improving health outcomes and enhancing the overall efficiency of healthcare delivery.
