Dental Assistants
Overview of the profession:
Dental assistants play a crucial role in the dental healthcare team by supporting dentists and ensuring the dental office runs smoothly. They are responsible for a variety of tasks, including preparing treatment rooms, sterilizing instruments, keeping patient records, managing inventory, and scheduling appointments. Dental Assistants also play an important role in comforting and listening to patient concerns, easing anxieties, and providing oral health education. Michigan recognizes two dental assisting occupations: Dental Assistants and Registered Dental Assistants. Dental Assistants receive on-the-job training from an employer. Registered Dental Assistants are licensed through the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs. They must complete an education program accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation, pass the Michigan RDA exam, and hold a current basic life support or advanced cardiac life support certification. Dental Assistants work primarily in dental offices but can also find employment in physician offices, public health agencies, and community health clinics. Overall, dental assistants contribute significantly to both the clinical and administrative aspects of dental care, ensuring patients receive high-quality treatment in a welcoming environment.

What is the difference between a Dental Assistant, a Registered Dental Assistant, and a Certified Dental Assistant?
