LANSING, Mich. — The Michigan Health Council (MHC) announces the appointment of four new members to its Board of Trustees: Christopher G. Nugent, R. Taylor Scott D.O., John Schwartz, JD, MBA, and Joan M. Borst, Ph.D.

“We are pleased to welcome these four outstanding individuals to the MHC Board of Trustees,” said Melanie Brim, President and CEO of MHC. “Our board members are critical to achieving our goal of increasing the capacity of our health care workforce to meet the growing demand for health care and to actively engage in efforts to improve health, provide better care, and lower costs.”

Chris Nugent is Market President for Horizon Bank, where he is responsible for the growth and operation of the organization in the Greater Lansing area. Nugent led a successful integration and merger of Horizon Bank into the Lansing area. For more than 15 years, Nugent has volunteered his time to the community and served on boards throughout the Greater Lansing area. Nugent will provide his financial expertise to the Health Council in his new role as Treasurer of the board.

Also joining the board is Dr. R. Taylor Scott. Scott serves as the Director of Curriculum – Clerkship at Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine (MSUCOM), where he provides support and leadership in the oversight of curriculum planning, implementation and evaluation of clerkship curriculum. Scott brings a breadth of experience in both medical education and practice to the Health Council.

John Schwartz serves as Regional Vice President and Chief Human Resource Officer for Mercy Health in West Michigan, a member of Trinity Health. Schwartz works to strategically align human resource and talent management programs, services and initiatives throughout West Michigan and the broader health care system.  His expertise will help the Health Council and its board to understand the workforce needs of health care employers.

Dr. Joan M. Borst is a professor at Grand Valley State University (GVSU). Borst has been teaching at GVSU for over two decades in the study of health care issues such as chronic illness, barriers to health care, hospice care, and HIV.  She has extensive experience teaching health related issues internationally including as a Fulbright Scholar in 2009 at the University of Pecs, Hungary. Borst has previously served as board member to agencies serving abused women and people living with HIV.  Borst’s extensive experience will provide the board with a deeper understanding of the behavioral and social factors impacting population health.

“We couldn’t be more pleased with the exceptional group of people who have chosen to dedicate their time to helping us build healthier Michigan communities,” said Craig Donahue, COO and Vice President of MHC.  “The perspectives and input provided by our board members are essential to creating and maintaining a robust suite of products and services for Michigan’s health care providers, employers and educators.”
