Michigan Health Council: Honoring the past by looking forward
On July 16, 1943, the Michigan Health & Hospital Association, Michigan State Medical Society, and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan came together to address health care workforce issues facing Michigan. This collaboration led to their collective idea to establish the Michigan Health Council. The Michigan Health Council is now a statewide 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to building a culture of health with health professionals at the heart of the delivery system.
Though we’ve certainly grown and changed over time, the Michigan Health Council stands true to its original mission of building health professional capacity by offering innovative products and services across six focus areas.
Our focus areas are:
- Workforce Capacity: Building professional workforce capacity in the Great Lakes region through directing initiatives and creating non-profit recruiting services, such as Medical Opportunities and theMichigan Center for Nursing Jobssite.
- Pipeline K-12: Promoting healthcare education and resources through initiatives such as HOTT, the Nursing Career Guide, and Michigan HOSA.
- Social Determinants of Health: Developing sustainable services to address social determinants of health, improve access to care, and create a culture of health in Michigan.
- Clinical Education: Working with clinical students to provide support in their client and professional interactions through products such as ACEMAPP, which supports rotation scheduling and learning management.
- Interprofessional Education & Collaborative Practice: Creating a platform to inform the community of health care students and professionals about team-based care delivered by two or more professions learning about, from, and with each other through the Education to Practice(E2P) initiative.
- Primary Care: Addressing issues around the supply, demand, and capacity of the primary care workforce through initiatives such as the Michigan Center for Nursing and the Nursing Action Coalition.
We are committed to creating a culture of health with health professionals at the heart of the delivery system under MHC’s President and CEO – Melanie Brim.
MHC has established several stakeholder groups exploring inter-institutional work to: educate providers regarding the impact of social determinants of health on clinical outcomes, build a learning health state for Michigan to help providers use timely data to inform care, maximize clinical education training capacity, and understand how nurses and other professionals can help facilitate interprofessional teamwork to meet patient demand for Triple Aim care.
Group members include: Michigan Public Health Institute, Central Michigan University, Ferris State University, Michigan Community Health Worker Alliance, Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, Population Health and Community Services, Michigan Primary Care Association, Michigan 2-1-1, Ingham County Health Department, Mercy Health Saint Mary’s, and Henry Ford Health System’s Community Pillar Team.
